Set in 1960s Elmina, the book captures the spirit of six-year-old Adoma, whose greatest wish is to attend school, just like her two older brothers. However, Adoma becomes disappointed when her father tells her to remain at home to learn to cook, sew, take care of the house, and grow up to become a good wife, just like her mother.

Bent on being educated, Adoma seeks her grandmother’s support. But, when her father insists that she is better off at home, Adoma shuts herself from the world around her with silence.
